Banya Bashi (Banyabaşı) mosque is built in the 16th century by the great Ottoman architect and engineer Mimar Sinan. His style is strongly influenced by the Byzantine architectural style of the museum Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and this influence may be also observed in the architecture of Banya Bashi mosque, which also reflects the typical methods of original Ottoman architecture from the 16th century. According to Evliya Çelebi, who visited Sofia in the 17th century, the minaret of Banya Bashi was the most beautiful in Sofia. It rises from the north-west corner of the square main building of the mosque. On each of the four corners are erected small towers, under which through rings are built girders. Each corner finishes with a dome and these four domes surround the main one covered with lead plates. Next to the minaret there is a small additional building with three small domes built to commemorate the late wife of the mosque's benefactor - Kadi Seifullah Efendi. The interior of Banya Bashi has two levels, which is typical for the Ottoman Empirе mosques. On the first level the area is reserved only to men and on the second may pray only women. The total capacity of the mosque is 700-1200 people. The walls of the building are made by sequential rows of red bricks and cut stone and inside are decorated by an elaborated calligraphy in blue – the so called "arabesque", which resembles Arabic letters and includes citations from the Qur'an (Koran). This type of decoration is used in Islam temples together with geometric decorations, floral and vegetation patterns as the depiction of images is against the religious canon.
